children. It is estimated that one in 20 children, or a child in every
classroom, is at risk for vision loss if their vision disorder goes undetected
and untreated. Through programs of research, education and training, we seek to accomplish our mission, to eliminate preventable

If you have any other advice or tips, please feel free to respond.

Premature infants should be fit with plastic frames
called "stubbies." These are fitted with a soft cloth strap around the head. Increase
concern should be given with straps on infants. They can be pulled down around
the neck with the possibility of choking.

Shop
for glasses when the pupils are not dilated.

A board
certified optician has had training to fit glasses properly

Inquire
about warranties on children's frames and lenses.

If a
frame looks too big, it is! Search for a frame that fits now.

For
toddlers, metal frames with adjustable silicone nose pads are appropriate.
Cable temples, silicone covers, or straps will keep glasses seated at the top
of the bridge of the nose.

As the
child matures the nose is able to support plastic or metal frames.

The
eyes should be centered in the frame with enough space vertically so that the child
does not look over or under the glasses.

Bifocals
should be placed at the lower border of the undilated pupil. It is usually best
to have a visible line in the bifocal lens.

It may
take up to two weeks to adjust to the new glasses. Encouragement and positive
family support further the likelihood your child will like wearing their glasses

Before she got the glasses she was very concerned about getting them. Before we went to the glasses shop I contacted a couple of my friends who have little girls around her age in glasses and asked for them to send me smiley pictures of them in their glasses. I also sat Belle right down next to me and showed her their facebook pictures and such so she could see that little girls wear glasses and do everything just fine. The timing worked out well also because the day before we went another little girl in her class came in with glasses - previously only a boy had them and a girl that "spits". So belle was just not associating positive things with glasses. It got her really excited about picking out a pair so when we got to the glasses place I told the optician that I just needed to see the ones with the nosepiece (for patching) and so she got out the tray and filled it up with all the girly ones and let belle pick. She had a good time picking and was soooo opinionated about the different styles! The funny thing is that the style she settled on turned out to be the first pair she tried and the pair also that the girl behind the counter had selected for her - so after like 30 minutes of shopping she settled on the first style! ah.. kids!!!! Picking out a pretty style definitely made the glasses transition easier. What sealed the love for her glasses was when she put them on and she told me EVERYTHING ISN"T SO FLUFFY ANYMORE! That was a moment. She couldn't stop looking in the mirror at the place and then all the way home she was glued to looking out the car window!!! She pointed out birds!

I'm so happy that the glasses transition turned out to be way easier and the fears/hesitation went away.

Now, if we could make it past the patching hurdle... it is getting easier but compliance is still an issue.
